Problem

Inadequacy in income adversely affect the ability of low-income women to pay for and access basic needs such as food, shelter, clothing, education and health; further resulting in poor living conditions, health and wealth outcomes- that further exacerbate their condition.

Causes

Women are affected with poverty more than men due to the general lack of basic skills, low educational status, lack of employment opportunities, discriminating and limiting cultural laws- that fosters gender inequality. Rural women make up over a quarter the world population and majority of the 43 per cent of women in the global agricultural labour force. In Nigeria that number translates to about 48 Million and 40 Million respectively.

Rural women are active agents of economic and social change and environmental protection yet continue to face serious challenges as a result of gender-based stereotypes and discrimination that deny them equitable access to opportunities, resources, assets and services. Hence, they are constrained in their roles as farmers, producers, investors, caregivers and consumers.

Rural women often lack timely market information, face challenges in negotiating prices with buyers and have difficulty physically accessing markets due to limited transport opportunities and restrictions on their mobility.

SOLUTION

25% of the 1000 supported rural women reporting improved incomes as a result of acquired enterprise management skills

SUSTAINABILITY

68% and 84.5 % of the Nigerian population live below $1.25 per day and $2 per day, low income women in peri urban slums and rural areas fall majorly into this percentage due to low opportunities and socio-economic problems.

SOLUTION

A generosity intervention that brings poor women and their families living in the slum out of poverty within 2 years. their own business at an early age, also employing youths like themselves, thereby improving their livelihood and others.

OUTCOME

Improvement in the standard of living of poor women living in the slums, establishing their own sustainable enterprise and/or changing their location for better opportunities.

SUSTAINABILITY

The poor women are given daily basic needs to cover feeding, and education expenses. The costs for these and more are saved in a micro-savings account to start up their chosen enterprise: women cooperatives are arranged to foster getting of grant loans for their business and monitoring.

Generosity boxes are placed in schools and other organizations to gather basic needs.

Problem

Nigeria rates high in unemployment among other developing nations with a recent spike of 23.10%; a major population of the unemployed are the youths. Young people continue to suffer neglect as they rate 13.41% of the unemployed in Nigeria; this makes them a major population of those who cannot afford education and a good standard of living..

SOLUTION

To curb the root of unemployment more youths need to be empowered, by supporting them through capacity building programs in their bid to develop employable, and enterprise management skills. An initiative that educates young people on entrepreneurship, so they can develop avid interest in owning their own business at an early age, also employing youths like themselves, thereby improving their livelihood and others.

OUTCOME

2000 low income students are informed and understand the practical principles and advantages of entrepreneurship. Improvement in secondary education due to the added value of extra classes on entrepreneurship in their curriculum.

SUSTAINABILITY

Empowered students form a network of educated and skilled entrepreneurs who can train other students and create cell groups of youths running different enterprise niches along their targeted business value chain.

Supporting Technology Integration in Rural Education is an initiative aimed at availing the opportunity presented by ICT; in increasing access to quality education in rural schools.

Problem

Rural school students have more than 5 times lesser chances of going into higher education than the urban ones. Yet for various reasons, qualified teachers are not keen to move to rural areas. Poverty is especially severe in rural areas, where up to 80 per cent of estimated 100million rural populations live below the poverty line, with limited access to basic socioeconomic support and opportunities 90% of Youths in rural communities’ lack basic ICT skills due to poor educational facilities.

SOLUTION

A community learning center that addresses the learning, teaching and training needs of the teachers and pupils. A capacity building initiative geared towards learning and improving computer literacy and ICT skills fitted for 21st century.

OUTCOME

1000 rural students access ICT enabled learning centers in their schools & community. Teachers access technology enabled 21st century teaching techniques and standard online knowledge

SUSTAINABILITY

Functional ICT business enterprise will run in the learning centers for marketing promotions Community support and donations from women cooperatives and community leadership will be encouraged for sustenance of established centers.

Strengthening Women in Construction aims to support equality in work and income distribution among women. The SWIC programme is designed to offer young women pre-apprenticeship training in class and on the job for specific skilled trades in the construction industry. It includes employability and workplace preparation to help women prepare for a predominately male work environment as well as to make them aware of employer expectations

Problem

Women only account for 9% of the construction work force in Nigeria, constantly challenged with the barriers of entry, development and retention. Women have continued to be underrepresented and underutilized in construction industry sector which have been regarded traditionally as stereotypically “male” occupations

SOLUTION

Empower more women to learn employable skills along the construction value chain in order to gain entry into the construction sector and improve their livelihood. If poverty is a disease that infects the entire community in the form of unemployment and violence, failing schools and broken homes, then we can’t just treat those symptoms in isolation. We have to heal that entire community.

Community engagement can only be sustained by identifying and mobilizing community assets, developing capacities, and the resources needed for community decisions and action.

Creating a three-way partnership among community, government, and outside change agents is a necessary condition for engagement to occur.

It’s the little things citizens do, that is what make a difference.

The consistent energies of people with mutual beliefs and desires, keeps the resulting life of each community growing and prospering.

Building sustainable communities is an achievable goal, but not one without challenges. If professionals, government officials and indeed the communities themselves increasingly work together many of these challenges can be overcome, the biggest of which is changing behavior and practices
